When the Romans arrived in the Iberian Peninsula in 218 BC, what they found was a region that already had a road network (Via Heraclea). Emperor Augustus restructured this road and widened it, marked it with landmarks (milestones), built bridges over it and organized it in such a way that travellers could rest along the way. After this renovation, the road became known as Via Augusta. Over the centuries, the road continued to be used until well into the 20th century.<\/p>\n
